The area was first settled in the late 1600’s near the Hudson River. The name came about as a result of a patent application by Naning Harmansen. The resulting patent was named the Clifton Park Patent. The town, itself, was not created until 1828 when Clifton was carved out of the town of Halfmoon. The name was changed to Clifton Park in 1829.
Mostly farmland in earlier years, the area of Clifton Park came into its own during the 1950's when Route I-87, also known as the "Northway," was constructed. This highway allowed easy commutes to Albany and other larger cities nearby.
