The first name for the area was Colestown. This small settlement was in the area that is now the Colestown Cemetery. It became Delaware Township on 25 February 1844. Camden County was created on 13 March 1844 and the township became part of the new county at that time. The local people wanted a post office of their own, but the name of Delaware was already taken. When the post office suggested they change the name, the advministrators for the area agreed and the name was put to a vote. The name for the town was chosen by the residents in 1961 and was officially adopted on 7 November 1961. The Browning farm, which was located on Kaighn Ave. (now Route 38). The farm evolved to Mori’s Cherry Hill Inn and eventually to a movie theater complex. During the mid 1900’s, the name of Cherry Hill was used by Mori for many of his holdings in the area. The area had large growth after World War II. This continued until the 1980s when the population became more stable.
