The area was first inhabited by members of the Ottawa Tribe. The first white man to come and settle the area was Anthony Neusius who bought 80 acres of land in 1869. Many of the early settlers came from Germany during the mid 1800's. The area was known as Hazel Slump because of the hazelnut bushes and water which were in abundance in the area. In 1884, a school district was formed. It was called the Hazel Park School District. This was the first official use of the future name for the community. On 22 September 1941, the community voted to form a home rule government and on 5 January 1942, the city charter was approved by the voters. The first mayor was also elected on this date.
