Wilmington was originally named Willington. The current name of Wilmington came in 1739 when it was adopted with the city charter.
Wilmington is also known as the "Chemical capital of the world. It is the largest city in Delaware and a hub of industry and shipping. The first settlement was made by the Swedish immigrants. They founded the colony of Sweden. The Dutch took over in 1655 under Peter Stuyvesant, governor of New Amsterdam. Less than 10 years later, the English settlers became the prominent group with the devout Quakers becoming a large influence.
Atlas Blasting made blasting machines used in WWI. This industry and others that were helpful to the war efforts continued to operate during both world wars. After WWII, more people came to the area but many moved to the outside of town and commuted into Wilmington.
