The city's roots began during the Mexican rancho days. In 1839, Mariano Reyes Roldan was granted thousands of acres of land for his rancho which he named Rancho Canada de La Habra. The city was platted in the 1890's. When a local post office was opened in 1896, La Habra was given as the name. This name, taken from the Spanish abra for "opening," refers to a pass through nearby mountains. At the time of its incorporation in 1925, La Habra's economy was based mostly on agriculture. The population was less than 3,000.
The Milhous Family, grandparents of the nation's 37th President, Richard Milhous Nixon, were among the first settlers in La Habra. Future US President, Richard Nixon, opened his first law office in La Habra, located on La Habra Boulevard, at the site of the current Community Center.
